De Valette’s Battlesword

Original guard

This year is the 450th anniversary of the siege of Malta, an event which has gone down in history as The Great Siege. Historian and MHFA member Franco Davies has written a paper describing one of the artefacts from that time – a Hospitaller sword attributed to the Grandmaster Jean de Valette which has been resting in Birgu for the last few centuries. This paper can be read on Academia.eu.

Apart from being an invaluable piece of history, this sword also holds special meaning for us as it is the original which our club training swords are based on!
