Capoferro's Basic Principles
In this workshop we will explore some of the fundamental principles and basic techniques (which are basic because you need them all the time, and not because the more fancy stuff works better) laid down in Ridolfo Capoferro’s Rapier treatise.
These will include stringere (gaining the blade), cavazione and controcavazione, parry and contra tempo attacks. We will lay focus not only on the sword and the arm that holds it, but also on the body mechanics involved so everything works as well as it possibly can. Special care will also be taken to define the boundaries of these principles (more of something isn’t necessarily always better), as well as the common errors that one encounters usually, how to correct and also exploit them.
The main purpose behind these basics and principles will be the necessity of staying safe, controlling the opponent's blade to limit his options, while also keeping the initiative.
Biography
Karl has been training rapier, saber, and sword & buckler (I.33) since 2008, with his focus clearly on the rapier since 2012. He is experienced and never loses his composure. He also enjoys using accessories such as daggers, cloaks, or even a wet towel. Karl's greatest joy is when his students experience an "aha!" moment, which he still experiences himself.
