Castiglione's Lucky Dip
The humorous title of this class is inspired by the writings of Frà Sabba di Castiglione in his text 'Ricordi', published in 1554. He writes...
‘you will enjoy to handle averagely every manner of weapon so that when needed you would know how to use all those weapons which not by choice but by fate will be at hand’
Among the weapons and combinations he mentions are: swords and large buckler, sword and round shield (rotella), sword and cape, two-handed sword, polearm, and dagger.
In this workshop we will try to identify and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each weapon and combinations and we will randomly oppose them as a kind of 'lucky dip', simulating the randomness of an uneven fight scenario.
It will be a workshop that is both martially educational, as well as a lot of good fun!
Equipment required: Masks, gloves and other body protections. Sidesword, Longsword, Dagger. Other weapons like bucklers, capes, polearms and shields will be provided.
